Our Story

Daniel's Plants was founded in Manitoba, Canada, by Daniel Fehr, an entrepreneur who originally ran his own horticultural business. Over years of attending expos and exploring greenhouses and nurseries in this line of work, Daniel noticed a surprising truth: the green gardening industry relies heavily on plastic.

Determined to make a difference, Daniel began researching alternatives. He discovered that many gardening products on the market were made with coir, adhesives, and recycled paper, none of which aligned with his vision for sustainability. His solution? Biodegradable pots crafted in France from a single ingredient: spruce fibers. These spruce fibers, which are a forestry byproduct, are turned into a pulp and heated in molds to retain their shape—no adhesives needed. With this innovation, Daniel's Plants was born.

As the business grew, Daniel decided to leave his previous business and focus on his passion for sustainable gardening. When he met his wife, Abbi, their shared love for plants took the business to new heights. Abbi’s enthusiasm for indoor greenery inspired Daniel to build her a living plant wall, which she shared online. The response was overwhelming. Soon, the duo began hand-making plant shelves, adding a new branch to their business.

Every shelf is made from sustainably harvested wood sourced in Ontario, Canada. Daniel and Abbi personally pick up the materials, partner with a local business for sanding and assembly, and stain each shelf by hand before carefully packing and shipping them. Their products are now distributed across Canada and the United States.

Today, Daniel's Plants offers a growing range of sustainable products, including their signature pots and handmade solid wood plant shelves, available on their website, Etsy, and Amazon. With shipments reaching customers worldwide, Daniel and Abbi remain committed to their mission: helping people bring more greenery into their lives. They’re always experimenting with new ideas to make gardening and plant care accessible, enjoyable, and sustainable for everyone.

The Process of Making our Pots

Made in France, our pots are a forestry by-product. Sustainably-harvested spruce trees from a local forest are turned into a pulp, which is heated up to over 1,000 degrees fahrenheit. This both sterilizes the product and allows it to be formed into our pot molds. There is no adhesives, peat, or recycled paper, which can leach chemicals into the ground. Each pot, when it degrades, feeds your plant in the earth.

The Process of Making our Shelves

Every shelf is made from 100% Canadian Pine wood. Abbi and Daniel drive to Ontario and pick it up directly from the mill, and bring it to a local small business who cuts, sands and assembles them. We then pick up those shelves and bring them to our shop, where we stain and package them by hand and prepare our shipments to go out!
